Botox

What is Botox?

Botox consists of a highly purified form of botulinum toxin that’s used to eliminate facial folds and wrinkles. It works by blocking nerve signals that stimulate muscle contraction. As the targeted muscles relax, the wrinkles caused by those muscles are significantly diminished or eliminated.

Which facial wrinkles are treated with Botox?

Two different types of wrinkles develop on your face. One kind, dynamic wrinkles, occurs from years of repetitive muscle movements that produce facial expressions like frowning and squinting.

The second type, static wrinkles, are the ones that develop due to changes in your skin. As you age, your skin thins out, dehydrates, and produces less collagen and elastin. Add sun damage to these natural changes, and the result is age-related or static wrinkles.

Botox only treats dynamic wrinkles because it impacts muscles. It effectively diminishes moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles such as:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines on the upper nose
  • Neck bands

Does Botox affect natural facial expressions?

Dr. Ferro carefully targets small areas of particular muscles underneath the wrinkles you want to eliminate. That means that the vast majority of your facial muscles continue to show your facial expressions and you maintain a natural appearance.

What should you expect during and after the procedure?

Before your treatment begins, Dr. Ferro explains the procedure and answers all your questions. A typical Botox treatment takes about 15 minutes, but the length of your session depends on the size of the treatment area.

After receiving the injections, the site may be slightly red, swollen, or bruised but that’s only temporary, and you can cover it with makeup before leaving the office. While you don’t need to plan downtime, you’ll need to wait several hours before engaging in strenuous activities.

How long will results last?

You’ll see the full result in about 3-7 days after your Botox injection; then the effects last about 3-6 months. Botox gradually wears off, but you can get another injection as soon as that happens. Many people find that their results last longer with future injections.

If you don’t like the wrinkles you see in the mirror, don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Ferro or request an appointment online to schedule a consultation.
