Testosterone, a male hormone, ebbs and flows in both men and women throughout your lifetime, surging during adolescence before stabilizing in adulthood. But sometimes, due to age or other factors, testosterone levels start to drop. While this obviously affects intimacy, low testosterone, also called low T, can increase your risk for other conditions, including diabetes, osteoporosis, and cardiovascular disease.

When it comes to low T, the symptoms manifest in a variety of ways. You may experience warning signs that indicate you could have a hormone imbalance. One or two of these may happen to anyone at anytime, but if any of these signs persist or you suffer from multiple low T symptoms, it’s time to have a heart-to-heart discussion with your doctor about your testosterone levels.

Lack of libido

In both men and women, testosterone has a huge influence on libido and sex drive. Although everyone has a different appetite for sex, if you notice that yours has significantly slowed or even worse, completely disappeared, you may have low testosterone.

Sexual dysfunction

In women, low testosterone leads to dry, thinning vaginal tissue, which can make sex uncomfortable or even painful. Along with the loss of libido, many men suffer from sexual performance issues when they have low testosterone levels. Without enough testosterone in the body, the release of nitric oxide is inhibited, which means that regardless of how bad you want it, your body just can’t form or maintain an erection.

Loss of hair

The male sex hormone plays a bigger role in your body than just sexual desire and performance — it also affects hair growth, or lack of it. When testosterone levels start to drop, both men and women may notice either hair loss and a slowing of hair growth and replacement.


Anytime hormones are imbalanced, your energy is affected, and testosterone is no different. When your levels are too low, you may feel chronically fatigued — no matter how long you sleep or what you eat, you’re just dragging to get through the day.

Unexplained weight gain

If nothing’s changed in your diet or exercise routine, yet the number on the scale keeps going up, it could be from low testosterone levels. Low T can lead to unexplained weight gain, especially around your midsection or in your chest. In some cases, men develop gynecomastia, a condition also known as “man boobs.”

Loss of muscle mass

Along with weight gain, you may experience a loss of lean muscle mass from low levels of testosterone. You may not feel as strong, and in some cases, your arms, legs, and chest may appear smaller.


Although low testosterone is often associated with physical and sexual symptoms, it also plays a role in your emotional and mental health for both sexes. Women may suffer from depression and mood swings. Men with low testosterone are four times more likely to develop signs of depression than those with normal testosterone levels, including irritability, moodiness, anxiety, and low self esteem.

Concentration issues

To top off the problems with low testosterone, many find that they struggle with concentration and memory. They may easily forget things and have difficulty with focus and attention.
